DOB June 23, 1941
Birth Name: Robert Burns
Born in San Luis Obispo, CA
Robert Hunter met Jerry Garcia in early 1960. They became good friends because of their mutual love for music. They both left the US Army in 1961 and started hanging out together. They lived for a while in two broken down cars just outside Palo Alto.
In 1962 Hunter volunteered to be a test subject for mind altering chemicals at Stanford University; sponsored by the CIA. He along with Ken Keesey were paid to ingest LSD, Psilocybin and Mescaline, then report their experiences.
Shortly after, Jerry and Robert played together in Bluegrass Bands. He played guitar, bass, mandolin and sang.
When he lived in Arizona in the mid-sixties he kept in touch with Jerry. He mailed the lyrics for China-Cat Sunflower/The Eleven to Garcia and six months later donated the words to a sonnet titled ‘Dark Star’. From that point til the present he has written many gems. A few of my favorites are Wharf Rat, Loser and He’s Gone. Deadheads all have a treasure chest of memorable quotes from the hand and mind of Hunter. He was the only (non-musician) to ever be inducted in the Rock And Roll Hall of Fame.
Robert has released several CD’s of his own music including ‘Tales of the Rum Runners’ and Tiger Rose. He also has written books of poetry, short stories and is working on a novel.
