He started playing keyboards as a teen with a San Francisco band called The Beans that evolved into the Tubes. They were a sight and sound experience much like The Merry Pranksters a decade before. The Tubes as a Theatrical ensemble changed the topography of Rock & Roll. They combined pornography with anti-establishment lyrics ridiculed Capitalism and the Media of that era. The Tubes took advantage of MTV and early Video’s which propelled the group to instant notoriety.
After Brent Mydland’s death Vince shared keyboard duties with Bruce Hornsby for about a year before taking the reins himself Deadheads cherished his crisp melodious chops and his pleasant demeanor. He shined on The Dead’s cover of ‘Baba O’Reily’ an anthem Deadheads relished. He remained in the hot seat until the band broke-up following Jerry’s death. He toured with Rat Dog and Phil and Friends, yet his fellow bandmates did not invite him to play with them as The Other One’s in 2002 which he took hard.
He formed ‘Missing Man Formation’ and toured a great deal. Unfortunately he battled depression for many years. The death of Garcia tore Vince to threads. He attempted to stay positive and create cutting edge songs but his illness eventually silenced him.
